Dragana Lucic-Jozak | |
My name is Dragana Lucic-Jozak. I am 16 years old and currently reside in Sydney, Australia. I originally came from Croatia and also experienced the hardship of war when I was a small child. This was throughout the Yugoslavian wars in the Balkans. My family and I eventually took refuge in Germany when I was three and moved to Australia when I was eight.
My shoe basically represents a group of children – each a different race – who have experienced war. The puzzle pieces symbolise unity and are a statement to them working as one to ease each others pain but to look forward to a peaceful future. Not one colour on my shoe is alike and so it represents different types of suffrage and that individual child. In completing my shoe I placed a base coat on the shoe and sketched the puzzle design on it. I used acrylic paint to fill it in and outlined the pieces in black. I added a quirky touch with a twisted shoelace and stuck it down with glue. I spent about six hours on it. I feel extremely privileged to have participated in this project and hope that others may relate to the message contained in my shoe.
