Hopscotch. For my project, I chose the theme of hopscotch and games. Various renditions of hopscotch are played around the world. France has snail hopscotch, there is alphabet hopscotch, and snakes and ladders hopscotch. What unites the game across all cultures is its simplicity and modesty. All one needs is a ground to walk on, and a tool to make marks with. It is a game that rich and poor, boys and girls, can play in almost any location. It can be improvised on the spur of the moment . The highest number in the game represents heaven, which is the ultimate site of peace and contentment, in contrast to the trauma and constant movement which is a feature of war. nn nnThe blackened shoe is contained within a box which is designed like a cradle which rocks back and forth when touched. This movement in turn sets in motion the marble that is nested within the box along with a penny, a piece of sea glass, a seed pod, and a bean. These are items that most children will come across at some point in their young lives. They are elements of nature and basic economies. They are found in fields, or on the beach, and any child who finds himself in such a place will pick them up out of curiosity.nn nnThe clay shoe is paired with a white sandal embellished with pink and blue flowers, which in its prettiness stands in stark contrast to the torn, burnt edges of the black shoe. With her best foot forward the child strides into the future, leaving the trauma of the past behind her.nn nnSandra Korpan nn
