Grief with its hidden smile / Transparent as a twig in April. Rumi.
Line the shoes with warm socks
funky ones with ducks
and dragons and let a child
wade into the sea up to her knees
and not give a fig. Plant poppies
and periwinkles inside, sprinkle
with rosewater and honey.
Entice a hummingbird to sip
the nectar, a swallow-tail to
alight on the toes. Cushion them
in goose down, couch them
inside a mother’s shoes
on a bed of fragrant catnip.
Turn them into Cinderella slippers
transparent as a baby’s eyes.
Wrap a boa around the footprints
and teach them the tarantella.
Reshape them from the first
last and decorate with vegetables
and nursery rhymes.
Give them a tongue and eyes.
Give them an uncharred sole.
