When first presented with the shoes: looking at
these shoes reminded me of a pair
of sandals we bought for my daughter when she was 3 years old.
They were red and had sisal soles and laced up. I still have them.
This makes me think of the small 3 year old soft
chubby feet, how they felt to touch,
How sweet they were.
The contrast to a child in a war-torn country is
almost unbearable to think about -
lack of food, clothing, water, shelter - the
basics of human safety and comfort; but
mostly the loss of ones to love and cherish the small human being.
I was later reminded of my daughter, pre-school,
taking ballet lessons, and these
shoes also reminded me of that, and the thought
that some other child would never
even have the possibly or even consciousness of
the possibility of taking ballet classes.
The dove of peace gives wings to the shoes,
raising the small child into the light and
joyful leaps of happy dancing.
