Roberta Woodgate, Winnipeg

This shoe was created with the help of a young child who equated war with dark days and the loss of the family. The end of war reminded her of a beautiful summer day in the park with butterflies and her family close by her side. The child expressed, When there is no war I am happy, the sun is shining, there are rainbows, butterflies, blue skies, hearts, and flowers, and I am with my family. When there is war and people die, I am sad and I think about losing my parents and sisters. The sky is gray, with big heavy clouds. I thought about what she said and how it relates to my research on children and illness. Children have reinforced through my research that the main struggle to them in being ill is keeping the family together. They stress the importance of /being with/ and /being there’ for their families, as well as their families ‘being with’ and ‘being there/ for them. War truly destroys the basic foundation of what it means to be human: Being with and being there for others. The shoe represents a summer day in the park. There is a beautiful rainbow reflecting hope and a family of butterflies tied together by their desire to be with each other but also free to explore their world. Together they represent the hope that all children will be free to live in a world where they never have to experience the loss of their families because of war.
