Article 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child recognizes the childs right to play. Play is an extremely important part of human development. It can also play a therapeutic role, fostering and bolstering resilience in the face of trauma. Children cannot play unless they have the time and opportunity to do so. War is one of a number of major situational factors that deny children access to the right to play.
Gabriel Krawec (age 6), of Winnipeg, Manitoba undertook this project as part of a home schooling lesson on childrens rights. Of all the rights we studied, he chose to comfort the shoe ( and the war-affected children it represents) with play. It is our sincere hope that one day all children will have the opportunity to excercise the right to play.
