Trudi Sissons, Lethbridge

a poem written by robert priest

reprinted with permission by

the author

To the sea for salt to the sea for salt

to the sea where salt is made

gandhi walked to the sea for salt

and he was unafraid

to the sea for salt to the sea for salt

because the law forbade

gandhi walked to the sea for salt

to the sea where salt is made

they shouted stop they shouted halt

but gandhi disobeyed

a big crowd walked to the sea for salt

to the sea where salt is made

they wanted some they wanted some

and though the law forbade

they all walked to the sea for salt

in a great big long parade

for just a taste o just a taste

old gandhi bowed and prayed

and took some salt from the shore of the sea

from the sea where salt is made

now wars are lost and wars are won

with bomb and blade and gun

but gandhi won with the fingertip

that he touched to the tip of his tongue

with a taste o salt a taste of salt

and so is freedom made

gandhi walked to the sea for salt

and he was unafraid
