I sewed scraps of decorative papers from my recent series of quilted paper nursery rhymes to cover the shoe. I liked the analogy of using the same material because the nursery rhymes appear to create playful, pretty pictures for children, but on closer examination of the text are often subversive political statements of the time. The patchwork of paper may be pulled away from one side of the shoe to reveal part of the blackened clay body suggesting that the effects of war fundamentally alters one/s body and healing is an act of forgiving, not of forgetting
