New Shoes. (Sticks, leaves wasp’s nest, glue, paper, fabric, paint, shoebox) Stella Meades’ ceramic smoke-fired shoe One diminutive shoe– one overwhelmingly tragic story. (Or many, really). Faced with the enormity of the premise behind this project, my initial thought was to respond with cynicism: nothing, of course, will “make better” the outcome of these histories explored in Stella Meades’ “footnote”. Looking at the blackened shoe brought to mind some of the images of the aftermath of World War ll; despite the destruction, nature in the battlefields continued to respond to the seasons, and vegetation grew up around the human detritus. As I contemplated these things, I was looking at the almost incredible green of the spring coming up through the dun-coloured dead leaves and sticks in my backyard. Thus inspired, I attempted to make the shoe become a source of renewed life by showing growth emerging from within, to convey hope. I used the new shoebox not only to contrast with and frame the composition but to constrain the story to a scale that does not overwhelm, but tells one aspect. Carolynn Bloomer
