Gabriel Krawec and Tara Norberg,Winnipeg

Article 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child recognizes the childs right to play. Play is an extremely important part of human development. It can also play a therapeutic role, fostering and bolstering resilience in the face of trauma. Children cannot play unless they have the time and opportunity to do so. War is one of a number of major situational factors that deny children access to the right to play. Gabriel Krawec (age 6), of Winnipeg, Manitoba undertook this project as part of a home schooling lesson on childrens rights. Of all the rights we studied, he chose to comfort the shoe ( and the war-affected children it represents) with play. It is our sincere hope that one day all children will have the opportunity to excercise the right to play.
